THE VINEYARD CALENDAR - 2010
This lovingly awaited Island keepsake is now available
for your perusal and purchase.
Peter Simon is now taking bookings for lectures at colleges,
corporations, and various other organizations. "Through
the Lens: A Life Filled with Friendship, History, and
Addiction" (Link: PDF -
144k) is a personal and entertaining journey of
stories and anecdotes, some photographic instruction,
and a very personal account of his own ups and downs.
Peter has recently become more active as a entertaining
and informative lecturer on the college and corporate
circuit. His power point presentation of over 230 images
covers most aspects of a 50 year career as a photojournalist.
He was a major proponent and captured much
of the 60's alternative hippie culture. Many of his images
of the music, celebrities and the lifestyle are iconic.
His subject matter also includes nude beaches, the new
age spiritual scene in the 70's, reggae and Jamaica, baseball
and the New York Mets, the breathtaking beauty of Martha's
Vineyard, and pictures of lifestyles spun out of control
by substance abuse.
Peter's
Photography Workshops
Back in the 80's, Peter taught an annual 6-week
beginner's photo course. It was quite popular and many
requested that the classes return. SO, Peter offered them
again the past summer, and the results proved very successful!
You don't need to have fancy equipment or know
all that much about the technical side of photography
in order enjoy Peter's course. Just simple enthusiasm
and a desire to learn is all you need!
Class sizes are limited to twelve students, creating
a more intimate, bonding experience. The "curriculum"
includes an opening night social hour, followed by a course
introduction and a presentation of Peter's popular "Through
The Lens" lecture.
Each subsequent day, students accompany Peter on
field trips, complete various photo assignments, accompanied
with hands-on demonstration of various techniques that
he has developed through the years. Each evening, students
gather at the Simon Gallery in Vineyard Haven to view
and critique each student's output for the day via power
point projection.
During the 4-day workshop, Peter provides continuous
overall and personal instruction, while covering a wide
array of topics such as lighting, composition, group/individual
portraits and posing, capturing the "Decisive Moment"
and how to use flash, depth of field, and action effects
to full advantage. The emphasis is less on highly technical
issues, but more towards the user friendly instruction:
everyday tips to make the casual or professional photographer
more consistent and personally rewarded. Some minor Photoshop
techniques are also offered.
So come along, learn some new or different methods,
or simply re-juice your photo philosophy and creative
energy tanks! Shine a light and capture the moment!
The 4-day seminars cost $500. Read
some of Peter's students testimonials here! Peter
will announce the 2010 dates in March.
Peter and Ronni realized one of their fondest dreams this
past July. Their new gallery, aptly called the SIMON GALLERY,
opened on Main Street in Vineyard Haven. It's a perfect
mix between Peter's celebrity and landscape photography,
and Ronni's stunning jewelry. Business this past summer
exceeded their fondest imaginations. We are located on
54 Main Street , right on the 50 yard line of bustling
downtown Vineyard Haven.
Peter and Ronni reopened an expanded and renovated
Simon Gallery in April and have continued the momentum
from last summer. A whole bunch of new items are now available
for perusal and purchase, including Ronni's wall hangings
consisting of semi - precious stones affixed to driftwood,
a large array of yarns and knitting needles, and many
wearables such as scarfs, shawls, ponchos, hats and afghans.
Peter has added many new photographs to the walls and
bins, pulling out some old classics that have never been
previously displayed.
We hope you will drop by while you are in town
to shop and schmooze. Our off-seasonal hours are currently
11:00 to 5:00 pm Thursday thru Monday. Please click
here for an article about the gallery recently published
in the Martha's Vineyard Times. Click
here for a photo display of our gallery in action.
New this year:

vineyard" Tees and spectacular beaded wooden sculptures

today can state the claim to have actually documented
the lifestyle of a generation while living that exact
culture themselves," American Royal Arts president,
Jim Lentz, says. "In capturing the causes, celebrities
and defining moments of the baby-boomer generation, Peter
Simon has created a stunning portfolio for the ages. He
shot what he lived."
